White Dots & Dead Pixel Repair

Is your projector screen starting to look like a "starry night"? Those distracting white or black pixels are the hallmark of a failing DMD chip. Our London engineers specialise in precise optical replacements to restore your flawless image.

DLP Projector White Dots Repair

Key Symptoms

  • Sharp white dots on screen
  • Sharp black or dead pixels
  • The "Starry Night" effect

Affected Technology

  • Exclusively DLP Projectors
  • Common in Optoma & BenQ
  • Common in Acer & ViewSonic

Understanding the 'Starry Night' Effect

If your screen is peppered with bright white dots that look like stars, your projector's DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) chip is failing. This is a highly specialised microchip containing millions of microscopic mirrors—one for every single pixel on your screen.

Why does this happen?

These tiny mirrors tilt back and forth thousands of times per second to reflect light. Over time, usually due to thermal stress from inadequate cooling or blocked airways, the micro-hinges warp. When a mirror gets stuck in the "on" position, it reflects light constantly, creating a permanent white dot. When it gets stuck in the "off" position, it creates a dead black pixel.

Please note: White dots cannot be fixed by simply "cleaning the lens". The microscopic hardware on the chip has physically degraded and must be replaced by a qualified technician.

Precision DMD Chip Replacement

Replacing a DMD chip is a highly delicate procedure that requires completely dismantling the projector's mainboard and optical engine. Our workshop is equipped to handle this with surgical precision.

Our Engineering Standard:

  • OEM Chip Sourcing We strictly source genuine Texas Instruments (TI) replacement chips matched exactly to your projector's native resolution and pin layout.
  • High-Grade Thermal Paste Because thermal stress is the #1 killer of DMD chips, we carefully remove old thermal pads and apply premium, high-conductivity thermal paste between the new chip and the heatsink to ensure maximum lifespan.
  • Optical Pathway Cleaning While the optical engine is open, we proactively perform ultrasonic cleaning on the colour wheel, lenses, and cooling fans to prevent future thermal failures.

The Progression of DMD Failure

DMD chip degradation is progressive. It will never fix itself, and without repair, the dots will continue to multiply until the image is entirely unwatchable.

Stage 1

Early Warning

You may notice just 1 to 5 distinct white dots on the screen. Often mistaken for dust, but they remain perfectly sharp regardless of focus.

Stage 2

Advanced Degradation

The dots multiply rapidly into the dozens. You may also begin to see "dead" black pixels appearing alongside the bright white ones.

Critical
Stage 3

The "Starry Night"

Hundreds of mirrors have failed. Presentations, spreadsheets, and films become entirely unwatchable due to the massive visual distraction.
